BRASADA RANCH CLYDESDALES

When you arrive at Brasada Ranch, and turn into the resort, you’ll notice pastures at the front entrance, and most notably three beautiful Clydesdales that call Brasada Ranch home. Their names are Misty, Karma and Kendal.

All the girls (mares) are nine years old. Misty is from Ontario Canada and was purchased her when she was 2 years old. Kendal and Karma were born on the Sisters View Clydesdale Ranch in Redmond Oregon. Karma is the only one of the three that has had a foal, a stud colt, who is living in Oregon City, Oregon.

There are varying stories how the breed started, and how long ago. Anheuser-Busch tells that the Clydesdale breed began in the early 19th century along the River Clyde in Lanarkshire, Scotland. This region is in a valley "dale". Thus the name Clydesdale. They were used for farming.

The breed today is much larger than its ancestors. The horse will stand anywhere from 17 to 18'3" hand tall at the wither, weight a ton, eat from 40 to 60 pounds of hay a day depending on the work required of it. The large feet were enlarged even more with the scotch bottom shoe to add support for the heavy horse in the bogs of Scotland. Though used mostly even today for pulling (drafting), riding the Clydesdale is becoming more popular with special classes popping up at the shows.

The predominate color of the Clydesdale is bay like the Budweiser Clydes, however The Black is gaining popularity with every year. The large gentle horses love people and can be found in many a pasture as just a pet.

Here at Brasada, we simply love seeing them playing in the pasture, and we invite guests to head down and say hello. They love it when you do. Just be careful of the electric fence, and please do not feed the girls. They have plenty of pasture around them to feast upon and their diet is regulated closely.
